My Favourite 2023 MET Gala Looks

Entitled “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line Of Beauty”, this year’s theme was a retrospective and tribute to Karl Lagerfeld, trailblazing designer and creative director of Chanel for the past three decades.
Apart from Feline Camp (thanks to Jared Leto and Doja Cat) and the vintage Chanel Couture extravaganza, another pertinent theme was the black-on-white colour scheme. Reflective of Lagerfeld and the Maison’s iconic colours, some monochromatic looks were a hit-or-miss — exquisitely powerful or painfully flatlining.
Do I adore this year’s looks? Not really. I respect Lagerfeld as a designer but was never really a huge fan of his work. With that said, the campy looks and theatrical dramatics at the MET will always have my heart. Jared Leto cosplaying as Choupette, Karl Lagerfeld’s beloved cat, might be my favourite look. Close seconds were Doja Cat’s kitty couture, Julie Garner’s custom Gucci gown accompanied with a flowing black cape and Michaela Coel in custom Schiaparelli. Outfits which followed the theme utilised classic Chanel materials and emblems — black, white and gold tweed, intricate brocade and white camellias all made an appearance on the carpet.
Here are some of my favourite looks from this year’s MET Gala.
